PAHs – A Hazardous Chemical to Health
PAHs (Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are a group of over 100 different chemicals that are formed during the incomplete burning of coal, oil, gas, garbage, or other organic substances like tobacco or charbroiled meat. These pure PAHs usually exist as colorless, white, or pale yellow-green solids. Some PAHs are manufactured by industry and are used in the production of PVC, plasticizers, pigments, dyes and pesticides.
Besides causing pollutants in the environments, some PAHs may reasonably be expected to be carcinogens. Animal studies showed that PAHs have caused cancer, including lung cancer, stomach cancer or skin cancer. Some people who had breathed or touched mixtures of PAHs and other chemicals for long period of time were found to have developed cancer. Thus, the worldwide awareness of PAHs has been raised.
Recently, the PAHs content of some electrical tools, which worth over 80 million US dollars, was found excessively high and related goods were refused to enter the German market. Besides, two doctors in Germany have been studying the harmful effects of PAHs and they found PAHs in rubber tyres of children’s bikes and other toys, e.g. toy hammer.
